Scandinavian Masters 2014
Sweden - 4/8 June

I saw something in your eye
As night came down in a Nordic sky
Here we stand in Scandinavia
Here we stand right now

-Donald Munro-

While Harald was jetting across the Atlantic for another DOGGS event and Kari was despatched North from Namdal after completing her cleaning and painting duties, the European Tour was in Sweden.

The European PGA secretary had to bring his Nordea Masters forward by a week to avoid any clash with our Scandinavian Masters(they have already changed the name of their event). They competed around the Lake course at PGA Sweden near Malmo, the easier of the 2 courses there(we played the Links a few years ago) and local hero,Henrik Stenson, who gave up his tee time to us at Barsebak many years ago, looked set to delight the home fans. However a Frenchman,a Scotsman and a Thai(sounds like a joke) had other ideas.Mr Jaidee triumphed at the 1st extra hole.He was rewarded with a sizeable cheque and a free session at Malmo's Thai Massage Parlour.........

All this 1 week after Rory McIlroy answered his critics at the BMW PGA on a weekend the Scotlands Kylie Walker won the Dutch Ladies Open and her compatriot Colin Montgomerie won his 1st Major at the US Seniors PGA.

Bjorn was back ,fighting fit, with his weight increased by more titanium and ,Soren ,had been sneakily practising indoors and outdoors.Ola had been clocking up more course time since becoming a member at Oslo GC and JR prepared by having a week off at Musdalseter. And we all wondered what the mysterious Mr Valeur had been up to....time would tell?????

And so on June 2nd,after a gap of 75 days,DOGGS sprang to life again,on yet another of Harald's "home "courses. As a warm up for the Scan Mas ,Steinar and Harald made a historic trip to Risor(Upper and Lower) and nearby Arendal and Omegn GK.

This was the 1st DOGGS event on Norwegian soil since JR and Bamse played at Tjome in July 2012......skandale....

It was  fitting that our Risor/NJ immigrant produced a good result leaving the Namdal visitor flagging behind. In fantastic conditions in excess of 20 degs under clear blue Nordic skies the twosome completed their round

The club was founded in 1986 but was only completed for play in 1994(using East European workers ,I suspect) and so it was celebrating it's 20 th Anniversary. At a par 72 streching 5521 meters it offered a challenging test over its undulating topography.

HL 34 pts
ST 22 pts

That brough a close to the initial  Lower Risor Invitation ,a new event on our calendar,so far without a trophy and  it was celebrated at the Peterhead Bar .Steinar was then treated to a tour of Upper and Lower Risor, which took all of 3 minutes, before bedding down at the town's main hotel....perched above a bookshop.

An early start to catch the Red-Eye Ferry from Sandjefjord at 06.00hrs got our Terrible Twosome on Swedish land at Stromstad in plenty time for their next game.

On this day,June 3,Scottish archeologists confirmed that the bones they unearthed at an ancient site at Auldhame (old home) close to North Berwick, were those of Viking King Olaf Guthfrithsson who died there in 941.He had married the daughter of Scotland's King Constantine II .They also uncovered a Navion Top Flite, with red dots, which had been deposited there over the white poles from the Glen GC.

....however enough of that historical rubbish....

They were soon at Mjolkerods GC,the attractive, very welcoming course which has hosted previous DOGGS matches. The weather was not at the recent Norwegian standards ,but the course was in fine fettle.Steinar was suffering from Jet-lag after his expedition from Namdal and ended well behind the buoyant Lindstoel, who completed another solid round and cemented his crudentials for the Golfer of the Year Award.

HL 34pts
ST 18pts

At Lyckorna ,the next day,a club established in 1967,Bjorn joined the proceedings. At 5805 meters against a par of 72 the Tantalising Trio were able to enjoy unexpected fine weather.Bjorn showed no signs of his long lay up with terrific tee shots and recorded a admirable score..albeit with a putter that will be outlawed in 2016....

However, again it was Harald who lead the way around the area where 5 centuries before,Sweden´s Karl XII funeral cortege wandered, with another solid performance.

HL    35pts
BKM 30pts
ST    23pts

....and so the early birds arrived at Hooks..

After the Oslo bunch had been billeted ,according to rank, fed, watered and night-capped,members had time to catch up on recent gossip.Overnight rain blew through but had gone as Day of the 2014 edition of the Scandinavian Masters got underway.

The very challenging Sand GC offering an inland links,if such a thing exists, hosted the opening round, with the recently drydocked markussen ready to go.Match sec retary Solheim(28) ,who was enjoying record levels for his VLGC fleet was launching his balls great distances.....and even in the middle of rthe fairways.....Bamse,who was still reluctant to part with his Bacchus trophy made heavy weather of ideal conditions, while Soren(22) showed some benefits of his winter training.Jan Randulf was still suffering from his long lay off and host/organisational responsibilities.

It was Lindstoel (37) who took the early lead and advantage of the Chairman's withdrawal to establish a good posting for the Herman Bouwmeester Memorial and Golfer of the Year trophies, which were sure to be leaving Rotterdam.

Day 2 dawned over the Skogs Banen, forest course at Hooks. This layoput which wanders through part of the Smaland forest is a difficult knock with many hidden hazards. This didn't deter our group.Bjorn(31) made a challenge as Ola (23) faded, giving Lindstoel a comfortable 12 point cushion going into the final round.

The assembled masses took advantage of the birth of Liam Charles Doughtie(2.4 kilos for those who are interested) in Las Palmas earlier in the day,to wet the babies head.....on the 70 th anniversary of D Day.

Hooks Park banen built in 1934,one of Sweden's oldset courses, was in fine fettle for our final round.

The first group set off just after the rain had threatened postponement of play, hoping for a
miracle.it was a hard fought slog with heavy discussions on scores showing how serious the event was being contested. The leaderball set off shortly behind.Harald played safe golf as the chasing pack tried to catch up.However it was Soren(28) who recorded the best score of the day as our New Jersey member stormed clear. At the end of play Harald(96) had increased his margin to 16 over Bjorn with Ola collecting the bronze position..

Some of the scores were very disappointing, with more active winter training being required from the Oslo boys.

The Bacchus trophy was not present, but will be presented to the winner during our St Andrews trip in September, properly engraved with the name HARALD LINDSTOEL under that of B.V. VALEUR.

The Scandinavian Masters trophy, that very attractive Viking drinking vessel was handed over to our worthy winner for it's hand luggage journey to New York.

All members enjoyed the unique hospitality of Hooks, its excellent kitchen and wine cellar and consequently thanked Jan Randulf for putting it all together.

The Official Scoresheet is attached.

After an early breakfast 4 Diehards started their journey north ,with a stop off at Ekarnas GC on route to Norway.

Steinar came back a bit as Ola and Soren languished further behind. But it was again Harald who showed the benefit of his exhaustive winter training schedule in Florida, with another fine performance.

The layout, measuring 5500 metres(par 71) contained enough short par 4's to make it interesting and rewarding.

Harald   34pts
Steinar  32pts
Ola        23pts
Soren     22pts

And so farewell kisses were exchanged ,the Oslo duet heading home, while Steinar chauffeured the Champion to Gardermoen.Jan Randulf headed to Lubeck for a car MOT as Bamse ferried over to Tjome.

A fitting end to an enjoyable few days......roll on Scotand.....
